The call I get on a Saturday afternoon more than any other goes like this: everything was running fine, then somebody plugged in the crock pot, and now the bounce house is on the ground.
Nothing broke. A breaker did exactly what it was designed to do. But there is a deflating inflatable in the yard, twenty kids watching it happen, and a host who now has to find a panel in a garage they have never really looked at.
This is the most preventable problem in this business, and almost nobody plans for it, because power feels like a given. You have outlets. You have a yard. What else is there to think about?
Quite a bit — especially in Cape Coral, where the housing stock spans sixty years of very different electrical practice.
Start with what the blower actually pulls
An inflatable is not a balloon. It does not get filled and then sealed. The blower runs continuously, the entire rental, from setup until we pack it out. The fabric leaks air on purpose, and the blower replaces it. Cut the power for thirty seconds and the unit sags.
So you are not planning for a momentary draw. You are planning for a motor that runs for six to eight straight hours.
Actual numbers off our own equipment pages:
- The 22-foot Tropical Hurricane slide ($449) runs a commercial 2 HP blower and needs one standard 110V GFCI outlet rated for 15 amps.
- The Venom Run obstacle course ($499) needs one dedicated 15- or 20-amp 120V outlet, GFCI preferred, within 50 feet of the entrance.
- The Giant Corn Maze ($499) runs a 1,500-watt blower on a dedicated 120V outlet within 100 feet. That works out to roughly 12.5 amps.
Hold onto that 12.5 figure, because it collides with something.
The 12-amp ceiling nobody mentions
A standard 15-amp household circuit is not a 15-amp budget. Under the National Electrical Code, a load that runs three hours or more is a continuous load, and a circuit is not supposed to carry a continuous load above 80 percent of its rating. Fifteen amps times 0.8 is 12 amps.
An inflatable blower running from noon to eight is a textbook continuous load. And a 1,500-watt blower drawing about 12.5 amps is already past the 12-amp continuous ceiling of a 15-amp circuit before you have plugged in a single other thing.
That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to want a 20-amp circuit for the bigger units, which gives you a 16-amp continuous budget and real headroom. It is also the reason our rental terms state that each blower motor requires its own dedicated circuit, and that shared circuits are not acceptable. That line exists because we learned it the hard way, repeatedly, in other people's backyards.
Cape Coral is two different cities electrically
Here is where my day job bleeds in. I survey property in Lee County, which means I spend a lot of time standing in yards looking at the outsides of houses, and the pattern is hard to miss once you see it.
Southeast Cape Coral — the original Rosen-era build-out around Cape Coral Parkway, Coronado, and the Yacht Club area — is largely 1960s and 1970s housing. Those homes were wired for a 1965 household load. Many have had panels upgraded since, some have not, and the exterior receptacle situation is usually sparse: one outlet by the front door, one on the lanai, occasionally one at the garage. Those two or three outlets very often trace back to the same branch circuit, which also feeds the garage door opener, the freezer somebody keeps out there, and the lanai lights.
Northwest Cape, out past Burnt Store Road, is mostly 2000s and later construction. Different world: more circuits, more exterior receptacles, GFCI protection that was there from day one, and panels sized with some slack.
Neither is a problem. They just need different plans. If you are in the older Cape, assume your outdoor outlets are sharing a circuit until you prove otherwise. If you are in a newer build, you probably have what you need and just have to confirm it.
One thing both halves share: the power itself comes from LCEC, the Lee County Electric Cooperative, not from a big investor-owned utility. LCEC is a not-for-profit cooperative founded in 1940, headquartered in North Fort Myers, and it serves Cape Coral, North Fort Myers, Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Island, Marco Island, Immokalee, Ave Maria and parts of Lehigh Acres. People who move here from the east coast of Florida are frequently surprised by that. It matters for who you call about a service-side problem — but everything in this article is on your side of the meter.
The five-minute walk to do before you book
Do this once. It takes less time than reading about it.
- Find every exterior outlet and count them. Walk the whole perimeter. Check the lanai, both sides of the house, the garage wall, and by the front door. Write down where they are.
- Test which ones are actually live. A ten-dollar outlet tester from any hardware store on Del Prado will do it, or just plug in a lamp. Outdoor receptacles on older houses fail quietly and nobody notices for years.
- Find out which ones share a circuit. Turn off one breaker at a time and see what dies. Label the panel while you are in there. If two of your exterior outlets go dark on the same breaker, they are one circuit, and they can only support one blower between them.
- Measure the distance to the setup spot. We bring extension cords, and our general rule is a standard 110V outlet within 100 feet of where the unit sits. The Venom Run wants that outlet within 50 feet of the entrance. Walk it, do not eyeball it — a yard that looks like 60 feet is often 90.
- Decide what else is competing. This is the one that gets people. Crock pots pull 1,200 to 1,500 watts. Roasters and coffee urns pull more. A snow cone machine, a space heater in January, an inflatable movie screen with its own blower. Every one of these wants the same outdoor circuit, and the crock pot is usually the last thing plugged in and the thing that tips it over.
When there is not enough power, and what to do about it
Three situations come up regularly.
You have one outdoor circuit and you want two units. The usual fix is free: run one blower off the exterior outlet and the second off an interior circuit through a window or a door, on the opposite side of the house so you are pulling from a different branch. A cracked slider with a cord through it is not elegant, but it works and it costs nothing.
You are at a park, a church lot, or a field. No outlet, no rental — unless you book a generator with us. Add the request when you book rather than the morning of, because that is a piece of equipment that has to be on the truck. This comes up constantly with fall festival season now underway; a school field or a church parking lot almost never has accessible exterior power where the inflatable needs to sit.
Your house genuinely does not have a working outdoor receptacle. That happens, mostly in the older Cape. Adding a new exterior circuit is real electrical work — the City of Cape Coral Building Division generally requires a permit for new circuits, as opposed to swapping a receptacle in place. Call a licensed electrician and the Building Division, not us, and do not let anyone talk you into running it unpermitted. Unpermitted electrical work turns into a problem at closing and a problem with an insurance claim.
Two things about GFCI worth knowing
Outdoor receptacles are required to be GFCI protected, and every one of our blowers is run with GFCI protection. That device is there to interrupt the circuit when current starts flowing somewhere it should not — through water, through a person — and in a Southwest Florida backyard in September, with wet grass and a water slide, that is not a theoretical concern.
Two practical notes. First, a GFCI trip and a breaker trip are different failures with different fixes. A GFCI has a reset button right on the receptacle. A breaker is in the panel. Know which one you are dealing with before you go hunting through the garage. Second, the GFCI protecting your outdoor outlet is sometimes physically located in the garage or a bathroom, wired upstream. If your patio outlet is dead and the breaker looks fine, go press reset on every GFCI in the house.
What our crew checks on arrival
When we show up, power is part of the walk-through, not an afterthought. We confirm the outlet is live, we confirm it is GFCI protected, we route the cord where nobody will trip on it or mow over it, and we ask what else is going to be plugged in out there before we leave. That last question has saved more parties than any other thing we do.
If the answer is “the crock pot and the coffee urn and my sister's speaker,” we will tell you right then which circuit that needs to be on. It is a thirty-second conversation at 9 AM instead of a phone call at 3 PM.
Common questions we get about power
Can two inflatables share one outdoor outlet?
No. Two blowers on one 15-amp circuit will exceed the 12-amp continuous limit and trip the breaker, usually an hour or two in, once the motors have warmed up and somebody adds a third load. Each blower needs its own circuit. Two receptacles on the same breaker do not count as two circuits.
Does the blower run the whole time?
Yes, continuously, for the full rental. That is what keeps the unit inflated. It is also why the continuous-load math matters instead of the momentary draw you would use for a power tool.
What does this cost?
Nothing, if your house already has what it needs. The blower, the extension cords, delivery, setup and teardown are included in the rental price — $449 for the 22-foot Hurricane slide, $499 for the Venom Run or the Corn Maze. A generator is the only power-related add-on, and that is only for locations with no accessible outlet at all.
